The A² 10-step GAF Shingle Roofing Process

Thank you for your visit and interest. We’d like to share A²’s 10-step GAF shingle roofing process, - this way you’ll know what to expect. Our technitians are factory trained to follow the neccessary guidlines that meet the GAF warranty requirements. The following steps are not just good ideas, they are a requisite for GAF to honor your warranty.

Step 1 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process: “Tear-Off of Existing Roof Covering”

Stripping the old roof down to clean decking is important for a number of reasons. It exposes any weaknesses on the existing roof deck. For any new roof to function properly it needs to be installed on a solid base. Excessive gaps or rot in the decking foundation create weak spots that can be prone to leaking, and are dangerous for those that might walk the roof. 

It removes excessive weight bearing down on your home.  Shingles are heavy - some 200-250 lbs/square!  While placing a second layer of shingles may be permitted in some jurisdictions, anything beyond that (a third or forth layer) is prohibited. There is no benefit to leaving the old shingles in place as somebody will eventually have to tear them off.

Step 2 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process: “Repair or Replace Bad Decking / Fascia”

 We repair or replace any weaknesses with “like” material – ie:  the same type (Planking; Plywood or OSB) and thickness (a slight change in thickness can be seen through the shingles). Repaired areas on a roof deck need to be as strong or stronger than the original building.  During this step we also replace any rotten fascia and fascia substructure.

Step 3 - A² GAF Shingle Roofing Process – Install the Drip Edge and a Quality Underlayment.

GAF offers various underlayment options – there is Shingle Mate®, Tiger Paw™, and Deck-Armor™. The Shingle Mate® is a high-quality felt, while the latter two options being synthetics. Tiger Paw™ is a great choice for vented, asphalt shingleroofs; and GAF’s Deck-Armor™ underlayment is able to “breathe” which could be beneficial in non-vented attic spaces.

The drip edge should go under the felt at the eaves, and over the felt on the rakes, for best protection. A properly Installed drip edge will accomplish the following at the very  least: 

  •  Protect the roof edges from wind-driven rain.
  • Provide a “lip” for water to “drip” off of – instead of running down (and prematurely rotting) the fascia boards.
  • Provides a flat surface that keeps the overhanging parts of shingles from sagging.
  • Helps to keep insects and rodents out of the attic.


Step 4 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process – Installing Starter Strips On the Eaves and Rakes

While GAF offers a few options on starter strips, we prefer their Pro-Start® starter strip. Starter strips hold down the ends of the shingles at the edges of your roof, and aid in efficient, straight and square installation. When wind blows on your house, the edges are a very vulnerable place where it can get under the shingles and start to blow off parts of your roof. The starter strip is fastened firmly to the edge of the roof, and a special bead of asphalt sealant is applied to the edge of the strip over which the shingles are installed. 

Step 5 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process – Installing the Shingles

We typically use a 6-hit nailing pattern, which increases the wind-rating of your GAF System, and the warranty from 110 mph to 130 mph (when used in combination with starter strip on the eaves and rakes).

Step 6 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process – Address All Pipe Penetrations & Flashing Details

Most roofing leaks occur around pipe penetrations or at flashing locations. These are areas where there is a discontinuity in the roof surface, and where inexperienced roofers may not know or be willing to do what is necessary.  GAF has a specific recommendations to ensure that any abnormality in the roof can be properly addressed. On pipe-penetrations, the GAF specifies the installation of a roofing-underlayment patch which is adhered above the pipe, emptying onto the shingles below. This way, if any water manages to get around the pipe boot it will be diverted back out on top of the roof surface.

Step 7 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process – Ensuring Adequate Attic and Decking Ventilation

Most homes roofs lack proper ventilation, which affects your homes performance. Most Building codes require a 1:300 ratio of NFVA (Net Free Ventilating Area) compared to the footprint of your attic space. The best practice to follow (which some locations require) is a 1:150 ratio. Power turbines can be effective if there is adequate intake ventilation.

Ventilation is critical to:

  • Help to keeping your Air Conditioning bills lower.
  • Aids in preventing microbial growth in your attic (Childhood asthma and itchy eyes could mean your attic isn’t properly ventilated)


Step 8 - A² GAF Shingles Roofing Process – Installing the Hip and Ridge Shingles

The hips and ridges of a roof experience the most wind in the event of inclement weather, and should be reinforced with advanced roofing techniques and products.  products. GAF Factory Certified roofers understand the importance of hip and ridge shingles, and utilize a specialty shingle, such as GAF’s TimberTex®, to protect these vulnerable places on your roof.

Step 9 - A² GAF shingle Roofing Process – Final Finishing and Complete job site Clean Up, Shingle Recycling, and Final Inspection.

Our crews spend the time to properly finish to our customers satisfaction, and thoroughly clean-up the area for a showcase property – and the best testament to our services and skills. We utilize a magnet to remove nails, and carefully go over the yard to remove small bits of debris. The torn-off shingles are recycled into asphalt paving and roadways.
